Spiel, Kultur & Kontext is dedicated to games as part of the media canon. The focus lies is on analogue games and the diverse interweavings they have with other media, contexts and discourses. From a cultural studies perspective, the journal is considered a platform for interdisciplinary games research that explores the aesthetic, ludological and narratological design, the impact and discourse-critical potentials as well as the media-pedagogical implications of games. By considering games as a cultural asset in a wide variety of contexts, the journal aims to contribute to establishing games more firmly as an object of study for cultural studies research and to facilitate the most productive possible engagement with the diverse types of games (including board, card, tabletop and hybrid games) and their medial and discursive entanglements.

On the one hand, the journal is aimed at an academic audience from a wide range of disciplines. On the other hand, it is aimed at players who are interested in a scientific contextualisation of their own game experience. The contributions are thus equally directed at the interested public in order to do justice to the aspect of linking research and play practice. This enables a dialogue between the hobby sphere, popular culture and science, which can also make research in the humanities and cultural sciences more accessible to a broader public. As a lived communication of science, the journal aims to make an important contribution to the acceptance and relevance of academic discourses.
